What Do You mean Gun Hits Don’t Count?!
You read that right. Gun hits do not count at OSG Paintball. We’ve heard all the reasons for and against it. We wanted to explain why we do things the way we do and why we are one of the last places on the east coast operating this way.
Let’s start off with some of the main arguments we receive to why fields should count gun hits.
The Myth About Blind fire
Gun hits or not, newer players will blind fire. Gun hits will not stop this. Referees enforcing the rules, reiterating it throughout the day, and being in the right place on field mostly stops this.
Gun Hits Count in Professional Paintball
Yes they do and they should. These players are the best in the business. Speedball is a fast paced game where a quarter inch could be the difference from winning or losing. It is played among (mostly) equals. At that level of play, it’s how it should be. Speedball=gun hits count.
It Promotes Proper Shooting Techniques
There’s no argument here from us. That being said, 70% of our client base is what we call “one and done.” We would bet most fields are somewhere close to that number. They play once a year, maybe once in their life. The last thing new players are concerned with are proper shooting techniques. They are simply looking for a good time and want to stay in the game longer than 30 seconds. They are not aware of where their gun is in relation to their body in relation to the bunker or structure they are hiding behind. This leads us to the point of the post.
Gun Hits Benefit Experienced Players
The majority of our players are first time players. For us, including most fields, it’s not feasible to separate walk-on groups into two different groups. So who does the gun hits rule benefit the most? The experienced players. We are in the business of growing the sport of paintball. If experienced players shoot out new players by clipping barrel tips, hoppers, etc in the first minute of each and every game, new players won’t come back. They won’t enjoy themselves, and they will go sky diving or zip lining the next time they want to do something fun instead of play paintball. New players having a better time greatly increases their chances of playing a second time. After two or three times, we all know what happens next…
As stated above, we are in the business of growing paintball. We are competing less with other paintball fields and more with other activities and sports. Making it harder for new players to enter the sport will only make it harder to grow it. This is why we have held our ground in the face of a changing industry, and why gun hits do not count at OSG Paintball.
